Portraiture, Painting, Tempera on canvas, 149x110 cm
Origin: Germany, Circa 1721

This portrait shows Johann Melchior Dinglinger - jeweller, sculptor, enameller and Court Jeweller to the Elector of Saxony, Augustus II . The prestige of this master of Baroque art was so great that Peter the Great of Russia stayed in his house when he visited Dresden. In this formal portrait, Dinglinger is seen luxuriously attired, seated majestically in an armchair and holding in his hands the famous chalcedony Diana Cup, his own work. Piercing the semi-gloom and dark tones which dominate the painting, the light picks out the face with its confident, proud gaze, and the hand which seems to be drawing attention to the cup, the magnificent product of Dinglinger's imagination and skill. The French artist Antoine Pesne was invited to Germany early in his career and was for over 40 years court painter to the Prussian kings, often using devices in his works which were more typical of French official portraiture. The Hermitage also has the pair to this portrait, Pesne's portrait of Dinglinger's wife.
