St Paul comes from a Deesis Row, the central image of which would have been Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator. The Deesis Row is the main part of the iconostasis , expressing the idea of intercession by the saints for mankind before Christ the judge .
Paul is shown full length, walking - as is indicated by the light turn of the body to the left, the placing of the feet and the turn of the head. The deep furrows on the brow give his expressive face inner tension and concentration.
In the attire of the apostle the artist used blues, lilac, reddish-brown tones. The closed Book of Gospels which the Apostle holds in his hand is notable for its bright red colour.
This late 15th or early 16th-century artist, possibly working in Moscow, showed Paul as a wise old man, the protector of Christianity. The traditions of the Moscow school of painting, traditions laid by Andrey Rublyov, continued to inspire icon painters throughout the 15th and early 16th centuries.
The Hermitage also has another icon, of the Virgin, from the same Deesis row.
