M-me Guillemet , her husband and her younger sister Margarita were close friends of the artist and repeatedly sat to him. The Hermitage drawing is associated with the Portrait of M-me Jules Guillemet Wearing a Hat produced in pastel around 1880. Probably the artist strove not only to convey the likeness but also to create a sort of a generalized image of a young Parisian woman.
